Entrepreneurs
Mani used to have a project-based job as a promoter for mobile phone companies. He did not have a regular income, and even if he was a project, he would be earning about $120 a month. He has a family of 3 that are dependent on him so he wanted a regular and reliable job that not only will increase his income but also give him the opportunity to make more than his previously intermittent earnings. Working at a VLS Chamak rig, he now has a full-time job working 10 hours a day and can make up to $190 a month, significantly more than what he was earning earlier.
Shankar was a logistics assistant at two supermarket chains in India. However, in recent cost-cutting exercises, his job was made redundant. Even before that, he had been contemplating starting up a grocery store on his own, as he felt that the organizations he was working didn’t have much respect for the job he was doing. He had been urgently looking out for an opportunity to become an entrepreneur and prove that he can succeed on his own terms. Working in VLS has offered him the chance to run VLS Chamak rigs independently and take charge of his own destiny.
Manjunath was a factory worker, operating lathe machines in one of the tool factories in Bangalore. However, he began to have health issues as he was required to carry heavy loads in the factory. He began looking for a job that would be less demanding physically but would continue to allow him the ability to financially support his wife and 2 children. He is now operating a Chamak rig at VLS where the job is not only less strenuous on his body, but also enables him to earn about 25% more than what he did working in the factory.
